According to the United Nations (UN) Plan of action on the safety of journalists, crimes against journalists are multifaceted and cannot be addressed by a single organization. It requires a multi stakeholder approach, involving all the actors at the global and country level, to comprehensively address violence against journalists.
In line with this, the Ministry in collaboration with the National Media Commission (NMC) inaugurated the Office of the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of Journalists (CMSJ) in May, 2021. Key to the operation of this office is the development of a framework for use by all stakeholders to create a safe and conducive environment for the practice of journalism; prevent violence against journalist; protect journalists in danger; and prosecute perpetrators of violence against journalists.
